Small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are an important driver of the U.S. economy due to their numbers, reach, flexibility and innovation. Serving their IT needs can be an enticing opportunity for firms that take the time to understand their unique needs.
According to an extensive 2008 CompTIA study of the SMB market, their general perception toward technology adoption remains unchanged. The majority (65 percent) of SMBs are “value adopters,” as they prefer to wait until the technology is proven in the market before making technology investments –aiming for a justifiable ROI. Very few SMBs (15 percent) identified themselves as an early adopter of the newest technology. Likewise, only 14 percent of SMBs consider themselves late adopters, only buying IT products and services when it becomes absolutely critical.
Once again, keeping the IT budget under control emerged as the topmost challenge for SMBs, as specified by the largest proportion (37 percent) as a major issue faced by their company.
